Miss Rumphius caught my eye in first grade when my favorite teacher read this beautifully illustrated book to our class. It became a challenge to my heart. In the story, Alice Rumphius’ grandfather told her to do three things in her life: travel the world, live in a house by the sea, and make the world a more beautiful place. That sounded like a great life plan to a first grader. I found the book again in high school, I was amazed as I flipped through the pages, and I remembered every illustrated page and the story line. I now have this book and read it to my children. I have traveled the world and continue to do so. I live close to the sea. I am always finding ways to contribute to my community. And Lupins are still one of my favorite flowers.
