The ADA has allowed me to receive an exceptional education. I had the privilege of attending college and graduate school. I pursued a career in special education, where I teach others about ADA. I can access most public places in my rural hometown in upstate NY and travel to other states thanks to the accommodations that ADA has put in place.
Can you share a “before and after” experience; e.g., before the ADA I couldn’t do X or was denied access to Y, and thanks to the ADA I can do Z.
I was only 14 before ADA became a law. Prior to 1991 I did not have access to any accommodations. My Dad simply carried me everywhere!
What advances in disability rights would you like to see in the next 30 years?
I would love to see more accessibility. Many public places comply with the laws, but others don’t because they are grandfathered. I would love to see more accessibility on planes such as seating and bathroom access.
